'We're having a heat wave, a tropical heatwave'
The extreme hotness is following us around: Calgary is having the having the highest temperatures for two years and it has only been thus since the day before we arrived. Being the hottest day of the year we decided to try to buy a small fan heater. In several shops we were looked at as if we were nuts and greeted by the same words "but it's summer". Our last ditch attempt was at 'Canadian Tire' (they can't spell in Canada either) where there was a display of about a dozen to choose from. You'll be pleased to know that the Shooter's are not going to freeze. Maybe we'll take the heat wave to The Yukon, who knows?
Actually, the LR is having a rest sitting on Angela and Jeremy's driveway for a few days until we head off into the mountains. It's going for a routine service to Land Rover Calgary before the northern part of our adventure.
Calgary Stampede today. Adrian had a frozen banana on a stick when he could have had a deep fried wagon wheel, or even a disgusting sounding deep fried 'kool aid'. I got to dance with real live Indians from the Siksika tribe - part of the Blackfoot Nation. The Blackfoot were the dominant Aboriginal people in Alberta and south into Montana but, when the white man came and killed all the buffalo, huge numbers died of starvation. The Siksika Nation reserve is just s little east of Calgary and numbers around 6,000. Today they are doing all they can to keep their old traditions alive. The dancing, include the incomparable, stunning 'prairie chicken dance' was compared by Gerald Sitting Eagle who explained all to us. I was amused to see one girl, during the welcome dance and parade, texting on her phone. Angela saw another girl taking photos with her iPad!
