'Independence Day'

Sung by 'The Boss' and written by a 'Spice Girl'. Go figure.

The day started with us heading north with distant views of snow covered Mount Shasta. Turning left we then had a 175 mile stunning, twisty, lonesome drive over the coastal range back to the sea. We passed by such wonderful places: Rat Trap Gap, Mad River, Hollo Bolly Eel and Upper Rattlesnake Bridge to name just a few. Great names but a paucity of life however, as we were alone most of the way. Magical. We knew that we were approaching the Pacific when the dreaded bank of sea mist appeared in the distance. Actually, the coastal fog is an essential element in the growth of the massive sequoias that we started to see after the final pass.

We called in at Eureka and got a little July 4th hokeyness and then crossed the bridge into Samoa and had a wonderful lunch in an old lumber mill cookhouse. No menu, just whatever you are given and all served by the jolliest waiter imaginable on 20ft long communal tables. Redwood, of course.

Our camp for tonight is in the Redwood National Park on the Klamath river. A lovely spot, even of it is getting a little chilly, as we sit outside with the sun setting over the water and the sound of distant fireworks serenading us.

Happy Independence Day America; you haven't done too badly on your own.
