'Don't Come Home A-Drinking With Lovin' on Your Mind'
Of course, y'all knew that this was a song by Loretta Lynn,'Queen of Country music', din ya? Well I didn't, until today, that is, not being a fan of country music an all. But now, I have to tell you people, that loretta and I are practically best friends. Yes, we are staying in her back yard tonight! O. K. So its actually at the camp ground on her Dude Ranch, but we are, quite possibly, just a few trees away from her Plantation House (it's dark now and I cannot see). We arrived quite late to a deserted campsite with just a couple of rv's hidden in the trees. We just set up camp, Loretta won't mind, and enjoyed a candle lit supper with fireflies dancing around us. Magical. Tomorrow we will visit her house and museum and may actually get to meet her. Too thrilling! It is a vast place; not bad for 'a coal miners daughter' (bio pic of Loretta's life starring Sissy Spacek) but the girl done good.
The garage needed the LR longer than we thought although, as compensation, I am now the proud owner of a Land Rover Nashville baseball cap, pre-frayed for added ruggedness. Jealous eh? They lent us a car, sadly just a GM something or other and we set off for the Lane Motor Museum. We had arranged to meet the owner, Jeff Lane, to be shown around. He has the most amazing collection of over three hundred vehicles, mainly European and in running order, and many so bizarre that you had no idea that they even existed. Only 120 are on public display but he took us down to the basement to see the rest. It was wondrous. He also rents some basement space to Nissan as they have their US headquarters in Nashville and keep many astonishing concept cars there as well as some racing vehicles. Jeff's father was always interested in cars and his grandfather owned the Ford Dealership in Michigan Jeff himself was given his first car for Christmas when he was twelve. It was an old MG, in bits, on the back of a truck. He restored it and even took his driving test in it. It is on display with other family owned MG's along with a gorgeous E Type that his dad had new in 1970. Jeff bought an old bread factory to display his collection and has won an award for the restoration of it. It was good to see our old blue 1932 (not '36 as I said yesterday) Tatra looking so loved. Adrian always liked the engineering of it but didn't like the driving. It is now being enjoyed by many which is much better.
After a great couple of hours we then swooshed downtown to take in the atmosphere of music city and enjoy a lunch of green fried tomatoes, devilled eggs and blackened catfish with sweet potato chips. Delicious.
Loretta doesn't have wifi, or even a phone signal so I'm not sure when this will get posted. Tomorrow, after getting better acquainted with her, we will visit the Casey Jones Museum, possibly the Davy Crockett house and then , my friends, we are going to 'Graceland, Graceland,Graceland Tennessee'. Oh the thrill of it all! I may explode with excitement!
