'So Long, farewell'. The Sound of Music.

We bade a sad farewell to our Landie today when we left it at the shipping agents. It is now on a great expedition of its own. It will go under the Golden Gate Bridge, this time around, and will then will head to the tropics and through the Panama Canal, up the east coast, then across the Atlantic to Blighty. We just have a 10 hour flight from Seattle.

We have had the most marvellous time in it; every day a new adventure. It has been extremely comfortable, if compact. The Recaro seats have ensured cab comfort during the 11,000 miles that we have covered. The luxurious topper and bed linens have cocooned us and made sleeping blissful. We haven't once thought that we 'needed' a night in a hotel; the few nights we haven't spent camping have been for logistical reasons.

We are off to the Boeing factory today and then to London tomorrow.

It's been a blast!

100 day ceremony

Rithy, one of our drivers, invited Lori and me to a ceremony to mark 100 days since his father's death.  In the Buddhist religion this has enormous significance. For the first hundred days that you are dead you are not aware of it.  After 100 days you wake up to realise that you have died.  It is on this day that you have to decide which path to take.  You can either decide to be reborn or go to Nirvana.  Obviously, such an important decision cannot be taken lightly and you need some guidance. A volcano and some frogs.

Adcap I visited Costa Rica in 1996 when we spent three weeks driving all over and I absolutely loved it. This time, we spent hardly any time in the country, just a quick wiz through but with a great day off near La Fortuna, home of Arenal volcano and a wonder of the world. According to me, anyway.   In 1996, the volcano was going through an active phase and, during the day, there were multiple eruptions of volcanic ash.  It was at night though that we really struck lucky. We were staying at the Observatory Lodge, just a bit over a mile from the volcano and in an elevated position, so the view was astounding.  I was awakened by the bed shaking, I woke the kids up and we rushed outside to see the show. What a sight! Molten lava was exploding out of the top and running in rivulets down the side.
